£13M Health Centre in Milehouse Now Open
DATE: 16 June 2009
The new £13million Milehouse Primary Care Centre has opened its doors to patients.
To mark the opening of the centre to patients Newcastle MP Paul Farrelly planted a tree.
Wasteland at Lower Milehouse Lane has been transformed into a state-of-the-art medical centre which has three GP practices including Dr L M Hussain, Castletown Surgery, along with Dr P J Franklin of 132 Liverpool Road. They are joined by Dr Shah of 2 Towns Medical Practice.
The centre will also offer a range of services, including physiotherapy, podiatry as well as speech and language along with baby clinics and quit smoking sessions. There are a range of consulting rooms in the centre, which also has two waiting areas, a dedicated physio gym and a large car park. There will also be a pharmacy opening shortly at the centre, which will have its own separate entrance.
Milehouse Primary Care Centre is part of the PCT's Fit for the Future strategy for providing services in the local community to avoid long trips for hospital appointments.
The centre is part of a joint project with Aspire Housing, which has developed 60 one and two-bedroom apartments for the over 55's as part of the Mill Rise development with the North Staffordshire LIFT company Prima 200.
Tony Bruce, Chief Executive of NHS North Staffordshire, said: "This is very exciting development for the people of Milehouse and will bring much needed health facilities to the area in a modern, purpose-built centre. It is also a unique project combining health and social housing together on one site, which is set to become a local landmark."
Sinead Butters, Chief Executive of Aspire Housing, said: "We are absolutely delighted with the success of this partnership project that offers people from the local community the opportunity to live their lives independently in one of our 60 exclusive apartments. Mill Rise will undoubtedly have a positive economic and social impact on the area."
Ann Pursey, Chief Executive of Prima 200, adds "The inspirational Mill Rise Village is a result of an innovative partnership with no less than 8 organisations including Prima 200, NHS North Staffordshire and Aspire Housing. Working together we have delivered a much needed purpose built healthcare facility and a new housing option for older people which is expected to act as a catalyst to the wider regeneration of the local area."
